I had a friend ask me a couple of question about the publishing industry. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 1. Can I track the # of weeks a particular title spent on various bestseller lists? If I wanted to find out how many weeks the Annotated Huckleberry Finn was on the NY Times list, the USA Today list, the Publishers' Weekly list & so forth, how might I most easily accomplish this? Do I have to hand look through each list's site & manually check it? Isn't this problematic if my title is #57 rather than in the Top 10? 2. This is the one I'm really stumped on. You constantly run into news articles claiming that a book has sold [x] number of copies worldwide (or you see similar claims on book dust jackets). Where are these figures obtained? Is there some information source for this sort of data other than from the publisher? I've called W.W. Norton, publisher of 3 recent annotated classics, and got bounced around to 5 different depts, finally ending with a curt "we can't give out that information." Yet, someone is giving out that sort of info for lots of books -- journalists seem able to find this info. So, I'm hoping if I just keep pressing, it's something I can turn up. Sarah S.
