Recently I wrote asking for book recommendations to deal with the car = accident death of a 2nd grade teacher at our school. I got one recommendat= ion for a picture book, but the teacher who dies in that book was retired = and dies (I think) of a heart attack and it wasn't really what I was = looking for. However, I've found a book I highly recommend. It's What on Earth Do You = Do When Someone Dies, by Trevor Romain. Written at a 2nd grade level and = aimed at about a 3rd-6th grade range, it covers topics like how you may be = feeling and what to do about it (I especially liked the 4 pages of = "moods," each illustrated by a face reflecting the word to help children = get a handle on their feelings), and practical things like what happens at = a funeral or a memorial service and what happens to the body, questions = that children may feel uncomfortable asking adults. It includes suggestion= s for memorializing the person, and discusses different concepts of = afterlife or reincarnation (prefaced by "some people believe..."). The language is straighforward and simple and could be applied to any = situation (although it's definitely focused towards the death of humans = and not pets). I feel it offers a good counterbalance to sentimental = fiction books about death, although those too have a place in helping = children grieve.
