Request for info about AR & RC usage

First let me say that I have just recently connected to LM_NET and have =
found it to be most interesting.  This is better than any continuing =
education course.  I have enjoyed following the various communications =
from colleagues across this country as well as Australia.  You have no =
idea how exciting it is to know the answer to a question or be able to =
contribute to a discussion.  Now it is my turn to post a request.

My Professional Growth Plan for 2001-2002 is based on an article which =
appeared  in SLJ in September 2001.  The author, Karin Chenoweth, =
presented a debate over the value of reading management programs such as =
AR and RC.  In our school we are using AR and have experienced one or two =
problems.  It is almost impossible to determine if this program is a =
"turn-off" or not.  My real problems are:  (1)  Teachers INSIST on using =
AR for a grade thereby forcing the students to only read those books for =
which we have tests.  (2)  The only challenges I have received in 23 years =
as a librarian have been about  AR books.  The ATOS formula is no help =
with mature themes and/or inappropriate language. =20

I need to have any opinions or experiences which you can share with me =
concerning these two programs. =20
