This HIT is related to a question I sent out a LONG time ago (in November, I
believe). I apologize for my extreme slowness, but I decided that late was better
than never.

>Help!
>I tried to order barcode labels this morning along with my other >orders to DEMCO.
> They needed more information than I have, and >couldn't answer any of my
>questions. I have also searched the web for >help and information, but still have
>questions. I AM SO FRUSTRATED!! >And so, I turn to all of you :) Time is of the
>essence, as they have >put my order on hold until I call them back with the
>barcode info.

>Their question: Code 39 or Codabar symbology?
>My question: How do I decide? Is this something that is dependent on >the type of
>scanner that I get (can't afford one yet), or on my >software (LibraryCom.com
>doesn't seem to offer any barcode info), or >is it just personal preference?

YOUR RESPONSES:

You have to call LibraryCom and ask them which symbology their program
uses. Most programs are OK with 39 (also known as 3 of 9) but it's the
program that determines it.
--------------------------------------------
I was similarly frustrated when I first had to answer these questions. What is your
library circulation program? Call their help desk and they should be able to answer
these questions.
--------------------------------------------
I use 39 when I order, but I also use alexandria check out system for
barcodes. You might want to check with other media specialist in your county to
see which one to use.
--------------------------------------------
It's part of your library software. Look in your manual, check the index for
barcodes and it will tell you. Also you can check what the previous librarian has
ordered.
--------------------------------------------
Should be code 39. If you fax them a photocopy sample of what you already have,
they will know.
--------------------------------------------
First, find out for sure what symbologies your electronic system will read. It
probably can read both coda bar and 3 of 9 as they are pretty common among
libraries.
--------------------------------------------
This is software specific. Call your LibraryCom company and ask.
--------------------------------------------
Code 39 seems to be the standard for libraries. Only one vendor I know of requires
Codabar and that's (what used to be) Dynix.
--------------------------------------------
Contact your software company and ask what topology they will read WHEN
you get your scanner.
--------------------------------------------
ask for the 3 of 9 bar code symbology and have the jobber send the barcode labels
unattached. I find that the 3 of 9 is used with more automation systems than the
other. When your automation system is in place, try scanning the unattached labels
to see if your barcode scanner reads and interprets them. If so, then you can place
the barcodes on your books and enter your Marc records into your program. If not,
you can create new barcode labels and correct your Marc records.
--------------------------------------------
This will be according to your software. I use Athena and probably
Winnebago uses the same and maybe Follette. My bardcode symbology is 39 or 3 of 9
