>Their question: Check digit__________ >Check digit calculation? No check digit? >My question: I have looked at various websites searching for info on >this, and >now have a vague idea of what a check digit does, but do I >need one? what would >I put in the blank? YOUR RESPONSES: You do want a check code. If you have to enter the numbers in by hand, if will alert you if you enter them incorrectly. But I don't know if it matters what number you choose. --------------------------------------------- This again is dependent on your program. Ask your vendor. --------------------------------------------- Put the check digit in. It can't hurt and adds a bit of uniqueness to the barcode. Most systems know how to handle it. -------------------------------------------- This is software specific. Call LibraryCom and ask. -------------------------------------------- The answer to this question is yes or no, not a particular number, which will change with the total digits in the rest of the barcode (total of 14 digits, including the check sum digit) -------------------------------------------- The check digit is unnecessary, but some systems used it. For example, I have some books that have barcode labels reading T-----. I have set the preferences in my system to ignore the check digit. -------------------------------------------- >Their question: Four digit assigned library code? >My question: umm... what? do I need this? where do I find it? YOUR RESPONSES: This is only needed if you are part of a larger system where the barcode numbers include which branch. You probably don't need it. We don't use it at all. -------------------------------------------- if you ever, remotely, might, just maybe, could join with other libraries (school or public) for any reason, use the 14 digit length with location code embedded. Don't have a location code? Make one up. It is usually 4 digits in length (I know that is true of code 3 of 9 and think that applies to Collabra). If other large libraries are using 14 digit codes (public or academic) ask them what their location codes are and try to avoid duplicating theirs. Ask them what they are using (code 3 of 9 or what). You might want to use whatever is the majority. -------------------------------------------- This is used when you have several locations and they are all in one database. For example, one four digit code might indicate a high school, another a middle school. -------------------------------------------- in some big systems, the first four digits indicate the school (i.e., my school is 241----). For a union catalog, this information helps to track items back to the source. -------------------------------------------- If you assign your own numbers within your own county/dstrict, this would be no. If not you may want to let them assign you a number and just make sure you maintain consisteny with additional orders from other vendors. -------------------------------------------- ****************************************************** Karisa Hayward, Librarian EskDale High School EskDale, Utah Daisy@goducks.com What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it's all about? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
