Good Friday Morning, Netters!
I asked a more general version of the this question last year, but now I
have specifics because it's coming around again. Of Mice and Men was brought
to our district Instructional Materials Selection Committee (IMSC) for
approval as a required novel for 8th grade English. The high school English
teachers on the Curriculum Committee do not believe that it is
developmentally appropriate for middle school and the IMSC agrees. So we did
not approve it to be used for all 8th graders. The 8th grade teachers have
asked for a second hearing to reserve Of Mice and Men as a "menu selection"
for 8th grade. (Putting a title on the menu means it's not required for all
students but is reserved for that grade level and therefore it cannot be
taught anywhere else in the curriculum.) The chair of the IMSC has asked me
to find a answers to these questions:
Do you teach Of Mice and Men in your district?
If yes, in what grade level is taught?
Have you had a challenge to Of Mice and Men, either as a required text or a
library book?
If yes, what was the outcome?
I'd like to talk with you more if your district is using Of Mice and Men in
middle school.
