This has caused some confusion among out students, so maybe you can help me
with this question. Was Cleopatra Egyptian or Greek? During Black History
month Cleopatra was listed by one of the teachers as an historical black
person (she had also listed Georgia O'Keefe and Eli Whitney?!?). From what I
have read, I had the impression that she was actually Greek, of the Ptolemy
family, who were ruling Egypt. It caused a huge discussion this week with my
sixth graders when I received a new biography of Cleopatra. Any historians
out there who can help with this? I thought perhaps her father, who was
Greek, might have married an Egyptian, but I can't find any mention of her
mother in any encyclopedias or reference books I have.
