I knew I could count on you! Many thanks to all who took the time to
respond. First, many suggested my friend borrow tapes from the public
library. Wonderful idea! She does have access to a large library
system. Other points made: some systems allow users to place holds
online; tapes may be available via ILL, too. And the tapes she
already owns might be donated to the library for a tax deduction!

Second, thanks for the names and URLs for Books on Tape, Recorded
Books, and other companies that do rent audiobooks.

Several mentioned that Cracker Barrel and some truck stop convenience
stores rent tapes.

At audible.com one pays a monthly fee and downloads titles (MP3 player
available with subscription)

In Iowa, Area Education Agencies will lend audiobooks to schools.

And then there's the possibility of subscribing to a digital radio
service (Sirius?) and receiving commercial-free radio via a special
receiver in your car.

Thanks again,
Cindy
