<grin> did that title get your attention? A group of teachers are giving their hs students (of varying reading levels) three dif. titles all having something to do with journeys and how they influence personal growth. the highest group is reading the Alchemist by Cohelo, followed by a Scott O'Dell book and the last group will be studying the writing of Langston Huges using a text book. The question: what would be an appropriate activity to launch this theme and to get the points across about different types of journeys and personal growth? I'm personally thinking to suggest some evocative historic photographs that are known to 'strike a chord' when viewed. In response, the student would be encouraged to say how this 'changed' them. From there to discuss other influences on how we grow and change (such as journeys) .... Anyone got another idea for this? I was also wondering about setting goals for sports as a means to introduce the unit...but not sure how to work that....
