I am a new middle school librarian, grades 6-8. I want to order some =
books geared towards 8th graders, as our collection is really lacking in =
this area. Here is my dilemma. Some books that I have read and am =
thinking of ordering, such as _Burger Wuss_ or _When She Was Good_ have =
conflicting reviews in terms of age appropriateness. Often I find that =
VOYA and SLJ differ in their opinions; one might recommend the books for =
8th and above, while the other recommends it for 9th and above or senior =
level.
So I guess my question to you all is how do you decide when to put a book =
in your collection when the reviews are conflicting in terms of age level? =
I know that some of the decision must come from the type of community I'm =
in, but that only gets me so far. The two titles mentioned above are just =
a few that I can remember off the top of my head, but there are many that =
I have come across in this situation. I feel (mostly) comfortable placing =
these two books in my collection, but because the reviews differ, am I =
setting myself up for failure if the books were to be challenged?
Any help or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! =20
