If you'd still like to use a film in conjunction with print materials, I have a suggestion. We have a great research project that compares the reality of the Wild West to that portrayed in Hollywood films. We use this at the HS level, but I'm sure it could be adapted to elementary. The class watches a Hollywood western and then each student chooses from a list of research topics. These topics include Native American nations often portrayed in westerns (Apache), women, Asian immigrants, African-Americans, prominent people (Buffalo Bill, Belle Star, Geronimo), the Transcontinental Railroad, Wild West Shows, gunfighters, etc. They compare the reality from their research to what they saw in the film.
