Dear Rhonda,
This isn't a "study" and therefore may not suit your needs, but I am an
enormous proponent of author/illustrator visits in schools, as evidenced by
my four author/illustrator visits a year and by my book, TERRIFIC
CONNECTIONS WITH AUTHORS, ILLUSTRATORS, AND STORYTELLERS: REAL SPACE AND
VIRTUAL LINKS (Libraries Unlimited 1999). One of my teachers, in fact,
told me that she considers it the single most important thing that I do!
It is important to invite book creators to your school because it:
1) Connects kids to books in a way much more powerful than simply reading
and sharing them can;
2) Gives kids an appreciation of the process that creates the books that
they love;
3) Offers kids the opportunity to interact with people who have made
writing and illustrating their careers, thereby modeling this possibility
for the students;
4) significantly forwards LITERACY EFFORTS in the school.
