Thank you to everyone who responded to my question about allowing students
to play games on library media computers. Several people asked for my
findings, apparently I am not the only one struggling with this issue.
Here is a summary of the answers I got.
Most librarians said no games. Some said it very emphatically. Many school
districts strictly forbid games and have it written in their AUP's, in some
cases games were suspended because they caused too many problems, for others
games took too much band width, and some librarians felt that school
computers are for school use only and that students have plenty of
opportunity to play games at home.
Many librarians do allow students to play games but conditionally. Some
libraries allow games in the morning and afternoon when regular classes are
not in session. Others allow games during free time with the understanding
that research and OPAC searching have priority. The majority that allow
games allow only librarian selected ones.
Unless told by your school district, it seems that allowing games is an
individual preference based on your philosophy.
