Fellow librarians:

When I took cataloging not too long ago (Spring 2000), I learned to use
the list of state abbreviations listed in the AACR (AngloAmerican
Cataloging Rules, Revised, Second Revision......)for place of
publication. I noticed that most of my colleagues in the school
district use abbreviations like FL, CA, PA which are actually
abbreviations used by the United States Postal Service. I doubt that
catalogers in Canada, Australia, or England use those abbreviations for
books they may have that were published in the United States. I was
taught to use Fla., Calif., and Pa., for example.

The cataloging I receive from Follett uses the U.S. postal
abbreviations. Were the rules changed? I correct all my MARC records
to align with the AACR. I will stop if it is considered correct to use
the two-letter, all-caps abbreviations.

BTW, our state, through the Texas Library Connection, makes it possible
to share our MARC records with other schools, so it is important to have
records that are correct. I didn't want anyone to think that I don't
have anything better to worry about!

Thanks,
Julie Long
