Sorry to have taken so long. I responded individually to everyone wanting to see my sample contract because LM_NET will not allow attachments. If others would like that too, please contact me directly. (I received 28 requests for information and two policies! This seems to be a topic many of us need to know more about!) For the two policies - thanks to Christine Allen, Riverside, CA, and Janet Minami, Los Angeles, CA. I also checked with our legal department who gave me information from their online legal/policy service and I read through the pertinent information in three publications: Copyright for School by Carol Simpson, Linworth, 2001 Suggested Policy and Guidlines for California's Schools, CA Dept of Educ, 1991 A Viewer's Guide to Copyright Law, A.I.M.E., 1987 They were all quite similar - of course, because they all are following the U.S. Code 17 which deals with copyright. I was specifically concerned with Section 106 and Section 110 (1). My draft video policy deals with the issues of copyright, fair use, and appropriateness when using "outside" media in schools. The policy has NOT yet been approved by our policy department. (I'm having trouble getting them to find time to do this.) I did not include three components that were in some policies. My reasons are in parentheses: 1. Restrictions based on Motion Picture Assn. of America ratings (too inflexible, especially if a teacher only uses a portion of the film - I opted for references to appropriateness for grade level instead) 2. An approval process and an approval form to be signed by the administrator before the "outside" material is used in the classroom (our county administrators did not want this) 3. An approval form to be signed by a parent before the "outside" material is used in the classroom - some had this written so the parent only signed and returned it if he/she did not want the child to see the video (our county administrators did not want this either) -- * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * -* - * - * - * - * - * - * Judy Turner, Director of Library and Media Services jturner@tcde.tehama.k12.ca.us (530) 528-7364 Tehama County Department of Education P.O.
