How badly is the book damaged? I know it is upsetting that a book came back in less than pristine condition, but remember, once the book has been stamped with your library stamp, had the barcode and spine label attached, it is no longer pristine. ;) If the damage was truly an accident, and attempts were made to correct it (erasing the marks), then I don't know what more you can expect. I am sure the student feels bad about it and will probably try harder to keep younger siblings from getting hold of books from school. Thank goodness it is near the end of the school year. Many agreed that milk crates can be brutal to the corners of books. My question about the student who wrote on the front pages of a brand new book and erased the markings might have been a bit confusing. Everyone said damaged books are paid for just as if the book was lost. But this book is still very usuable. It was the idea that this student was the first to check out this brand new book and brought it back in less than pristine condition (a younger child at home got hold of the book and did the "drawing" in the book). Should the student face some sort of punishment (financial or some other kind) for allowing this to happen? Any suggestions? Jeanna Dennis, LMS C.F.
