This morning our principal gave us each a newsletter which had directives for the new certification rules for Fl. teachers which will take effect July 1, 2002. If I read this correctly it is saying that it will no longer be necessary for anyone already certified in elementary education to have any coursework or special methods classes whatever in order to add on an area to one's certification. If that applies to media specialists it appears that merely showing competencies by passing the state media specialist exam will assure a certification in educational media. Can this possibly be the case? How could a classroom teacher who is able to cram for the exam and pass, be able to professionally manage a media center and its resources?? This just blows my mind. Most of us have a master's degree in media before attempting this very multifaceted profession. What can the state legislators be thinking?? Any comments out there or clarifications?
