If the teacher works in a job where SS is withheld, the teacher just looses that money. >> Mary- This situation is finally getting the attention it deserves. As a matter of fact I just posted the Chronicle article on the teachers' lounge bulletin board at my school. I am encouraging our staff to contact Senator Hutchinson because one of the most appalling aspects of this article was the statement that the Senator's office refused to comment on her position. We, her constituents have a right to know where she stands and to let her know our position on the situation as well. This policy is so outrageous that when you tell many people about it they are absolutely certain that you are mistaken because it is so unfair that it can't be true. But it is! We are also hoping to work through ATPE to change this policy that is so unfair to teachers. I have accumulated the necessary quarters to qualify for Social Security but I will be penalized because I will be drawing teacher retirement. Why should that have any bearing on what I already paid in to SS years ago? This also effects a wife's eligibilty to receive her husband's benefits if he dies. Teachers will not be entitled to draw his benefits the way other wives can for the one simple reason that she made the choice to be a teacher. I hope that this will be an issue that we do not let just die and go away!!( Following the postings on the overcrowded library that had to house students on their free time, I had to laugh to myself at the response that suggested notifying the union rep! No such thing here! ) Carol Kershaw Teacher/ Media Specialist Student Elm Grove Elementary School Kingwood, Texas txkershaw@aol.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
