I was quite impressed with the recent HIT about how to teach genres. I
have not delved into this area as extensively as others have, but would
like to do so in the future. I was wondering, what do you consider the
rationales for teaching genres? How is this helpful and beneficial to
students? Do they just need to know them because it is an expectation,
or does it serve another purpose?

Please take this question exactly as it is worded. I just want to know
the rationales. I am not criticizing the teaching of genres in any way.
Knowing the rationales behind the lessons will help me as I construct my
own lessons.

Thank you,
