Hello again LM Netters Once again I owe a big thank you to you all and an apology for being so far behind on the HIT....the BCTLA (plus full time job and family life!) took priority and now I am able to respond properly The original question was... Our school has decide to make using computers for research as part of 3 goals this year. Luckily I was able to step in and agree that this can be an invaluble tool, but also to caution that we need to be careful of plagarism (highlight, cut and paste); authenticity and using the internet etc as only one part of the process. My questions and request for help are thus: 1) Does anyone have any good lessons or can point me to a good website that deals with ways to use the internet for research projects? 2) Are there any good ways to check for authenticity and validity of content found on sites....ie are they reliable? 3) Does anyone have any good lessons, sources on the net that deal with copyright/plagarism 4) Are there any good projects that you have found that are especially good for research on the web.... Gr 4-6 level... 5) We are a British Columbian school in Canada...has anyone found anything pertinent to Canada and even better that supports any learning outcomes for Gr 4 - 6 in BC? ================================ And here are all the great responses: ............ An updated compilation from the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technologywhich might be of interest. ERIC Web Links 2002/2003: Internet Resources for Children and Teens Compiled by Blythe Bennett http://www.ericit.org/weblinks/weblinks-02-03.shtml Also avaiable as a pdf at: http://www.ericit.org/weblinks/webLinks-02-03.pdf More new material on the ResourceShelf http://resourceshelf.freepint.com ******* Go to the Big6 web site for lesson plan ideas: http://www.big6.com ********** I came across this resource.... It contains some good examples as well as links to other resources: http://www.tomsnyder.com/enews/articles/2002-09-A.asp\ ******* Have you tried the Media Awareness Network site? They are Canadian I like their emphasis on reliability, and using the Internet as just one of the many tools out there. Their site is http://www.media-awareness.ca/eng/ ******** What about a subscription to Electric Library, SIRS, EBSCO, Gale Group, NewsBank, etc.? Technically, this would qualify as using computers for research, but your students would be a lot more likely to find well-written articles and factual information...and a lot LESS likely to stumble upon porn, ads for porn, inaccurate web sites, etc. It's so good that I'd pay for it if the district ever dropped it! You can show the kids how to search for photos only, build Boolean or natural language searches, etc. Also, with NewsBank, EBSCO, and other paid services, they show the kids exactly how to cite the source...including an article #! ******** Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators Web Page Evaluations http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/eval.html Making Connections on the Internet http://www.libsci.sc.edu/miller/scaslconf.htm A Webquest About Evaluating Web Sites (written) for 9th-12th graders http://mciu.org/~spjvweb/evalwebstu.html Educational Communications Board Surf Report http://www.ecb.org/surf/evaluate.htm Evaluating Web Sites (February 1998) The sites listed provide guidelines and examples for Web site evaluation. ********** Feel free to check out our school library webpage which has links to lots of great websites. http://www16.brinkster.com/mrspb click on get help for research and then check out the teacher and student sections. There are also some local, fee-based and other links at the bottom of the main page as well. It is in process so there are a few links yet to come. ********** Website evaluation skills are important -Teach students to look for date on the site - also author information Many of the sites that I use at HS would be too complex for Elem. Kathy Schrock ( she's a school librarian in case you are not familiar with her ) guide for educators (affiliated with discovery.com) has forms for elementary website evaluation plus lesson plans. Also lesson plan sites at GEM (gateway for education materials) and Education World may be valuable. ********* I am an elementary library media specialist and I work with 3rd -5th on research projects. We do use the computer/Internet, but the students DO NOT search for their own content using search engines such as google.com. In elementary school, I believe that kids are just nor ready for all of the content available to them and they are not mature enough and skilled enough to narrow their search. So, I do it for them. I have bookmarked sites that I show them and explain how to use and where to find the information within the site. I also use Grolier online and InfoTrac for Kids. ************ 1) Does anyone have any good lessons or can point me to a good website that deals with ways to use the internet for research projects? Response...... * http://www.big6.com/index.php This site is the Big Six Skills site from M Eisenberg. It is a one model that teaches the research process and research skills. There are many others. * http://webquest.sdsu.edu/webquest.html The Web Quest page at San Diego State Univ. This is THE source for info on research and the web. This site has it all - an introduction to the concept, outlines, templates, examples, rubrics for evaluation. Other useful pages: * http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/bluewebn/ From the site, "Blue Web'n is an online library of 1200+ outstanding Internet sites categorized by subject, grade level, and format (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, & tools). You can search by grade level (Refined Search), broad subject area (Content Areas), or specific sub-categories (Subject Area). Each week 5 new sites are added. You can get a list and description of these additions sent to you by signing up below for free weekly updates! " * http://www.iste.org/L&L/archive.html From the site," ISTE is a nonprofit professional organization with a worldwide membership... dedicated to promoting appropriate uses of information technology to support and improve learning, teaching, and administration in K-12 education and teacher education. ISTE's role is leadership-we provide our members with information, networking opportunities *This has a good article discussing Web Quests. The full address is at http://www.iste.org/L&L/26/7/features/yoder/index.html but I had to go to the archive and then look for vol 26, no 7 and then click on the article by Maureen Yoder. * http://teachers.teach-nology.com/web_tools/rubrics/ Site has rubric templates. It is very easy to use, with a wide variety of templates. Question: 2) Are there any good ways to check for authenticity and validity of content found on sites....ie are they reliable? Response: http://mciu.org/~spjvweb/evalwebstu.html a Web Quest about evaluating web sites from Joyce Valenze. ] ===== Elizabeth Gillies B.A., Diploma of Ed. (Library Ed.)
