TARGET: elem., Reading Promotion; Multicultural Books

I'm sorry.  I accidently put HIT instead of TARGET on this earlier.

For an assignment I'm doing in grad. class,I'm creating a reading =3D
promotion program.   The topic I've settled on is "A Reading =3D
Smorgasbord."  I intend to feature books which show diversity in a =3D
positive light.  Our school population (and district) is mainly =3D
Caucasian , but we do have Hispanic and Russian and Ukrainian students, =
=3D
as well as a Mennonite population.   These are the main diversities, but =
=3D
of course there are more.  We do also have children of mixed race =3D
families.  Is that considered part of multiculturalism?  I would think =
=3D
it would be.

I'd like to gather some really good authors and books.  Leo and Diane =
=3D
Dillion come to mind, as does Patricia Polacco and Tomie dePaola.   Are =
=3D
there any really good videos or author visits that emphasize diversity?  =
=3D
  I've also thought of using folktales and legends from many lands to =
=3D
study and showcase multiculturalism.  When my second graders study =3D
Native Americans and China and Egypt each year, I use lots of legends =
=3D
and folk tales and the students love it.  =3D20

I'd love to hear suggestions.  Please include grade levels you feel a =
=3D
story is appropriate to use with also.
