Thanks to everyone that responded to my Target. Your ideas inspired me! I=20
hope to use the program I created once I am a Librarian. Everyone had very=20
creative ideas and here are some highlights:

Suggestion 1) Introducing Reading Counts Program by Scholastic. Using own=20
incentives and rewards.

Many people wrote about Reading Counts and AR. So I am glad to know about=20
both programs if I decide to include either of those as well.

Suggestion 2) "This quarter, I challenged students (grades 1-12... this is a=
=20
VERY small school) to read 12 different things (I'll list them at the end of=
=20
this message).=A0 I called it the Reading All-Stars, and it seems to be work=
ing=20
fairly well. Every time they read a book from the list (or have a qualifyin=
g=20
book read to them) they get to put a sticker on the chart. =A0 Also, they tu=
rn=20
in a small form that I made that includes things like author, title, call #,=
=20
genre or subject... they need to fill this out themselves but can use=20
parent/teacher/my help if needed, and then have a teacher or parent who saw=20
them reading the book sign their paper. =A0 It seems to be working fairly=20
well... and I am developing a good "Recommend/don't recommend" list from thi=
s=20
as well. =A0 The quarter will end on October 18, and out of about 40 student=
s=20
participating, I have one who has finished the whole list (she is a 4th=20
grader) and 4 others who only have 2 books left. =A0 (I encourage them to tu=
rn=20
in a paper for every book they read, even if it doesn't fit a category on th=
e=20
list. =A0 If, at the end of the 9-week quarter, they have read everything on=
=20
the list plus extras, I will count the extras as part of their score.)"

12 things to read:

an encyclopedia article
a magazine article
a National Geographic article
a biography
a nonfiction book
3 Caldecott Medal winners or honor books
a Newberry Medal winner or honor book
a fairy tale
one book from each of these genres:
Mystery
Historical fiction
Science fiction OR Fantasy
Western OR Horse stories

Suggestion 3) "With National Children's Book Week right around the corner,=20=
I=20
once again turn to the best wealth of knowledge- you guys! =A0 This is my 2n=
d=20
year as a SLMS.=A0 Last year at my school we had a daily celebration for boo=
ks=20
in honor of NCBW.=A0 I would like to do that again, but I need some helping=20
coming up with daily themes. =A0 This was what we did last year:
"Hats Off to Reading" - everyone wore a hat
"Sweat it Out with a Good Book" - everyone wore sweatshirts or pants
"Brighten Your Day with a Good Book" - everyone wore sunglasses
"Sock it to Me with a Good Book" - everyone wore crazy socks
"Reading is Beary Fun" - everyone brought a stuffed animal to school"

This one wasn't a direct reply, but I found the information unique and=20
helpful if I have a reading promotion program during National Children's Boo=
k=20
Week or Spirit Week, etc.
