Dear LM Netters, Many thanks to all of you who responded to my question regarding recommended media specialist and student ratios. I hope this "hit" helps others as much as it did me!! Sue Schiavetti Media Specialist Illing Middle School Manchester, CT sueshe4@attbi.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- Perhaps you are narrowing your search terms too much. All state standards that I have seen include staffing recommendations. You can find links to several different states' standards at: http://www.sldirectory.com/libsf/resf/evaluate.html Texas school library standards can be found at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ld/schoollibs/standards.html We use a 4-place scale from Exemplary to Below Standard so you will need to look at the Staffing section in all 4 profiles to get a really accurate picture. _____ I just had to research this myself. The North Central requirements can be found at http://www.ncacasi.org/standard/emsu/ra.adp go to RA22 ______ Consult the webpage for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. http://www.sacs.org/ The site contains standards for accreditation and those standards include how many library media specialists to student population. _______ Try the library standards for Texas at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/technology/libraries/ ------ Each state department of Education probably has the ratios you're looking for. In NY state only secondary librarians are mandated (even though most school districts do have elementary librarians). The state reg is one FTE librarian for each 1000 students. It gets to a pinch when the school population goes over 1000 - many HS do. We should have proportional FTE staffing for the amount in excess of 1000, but it is hard to find people who will work part time, and Boards usually wait until student numbers get around 1600-1700 to add the second FTE librarian. Budget-wise, since Sept 11 - its a hard sell in NY. Hope this helps! ------ our Guide for Australian Schools - "Learning for the Future" states Total Teaching staff ration (inc Admin): Teacher Librarians ( EFT) : Ancillary Staff (HRS per week) 3: 0.2: 7 5: 0.3: 10 7: 0.4: 16 15: 0.9: 29 17: 1: 33 50: 2: 67 125: 4: 151 Hope this helps as a guide - full table available on p.46 of Learning for the Future Developing Information Service in Australian Schools. Carlton, Australia: Curriculum Corporation, 1994. A more recent edition is available 2001. Let me know if you want more info. Cheers, Paula Kelly Coordinator - Children's & Youth Services Yarra-Melbourne Regional Library Corporation P: 03 92033692, F: 03 92033696, E: paulak@yarranet.net.au Hi, Check out this page for RI frameworks ---------- http://www.ri.net/RIEMA/infolit.html -------- 1 to 1250 in middle school, think that is from info power ------- Go to the Accreditation sites. They set the standards for the secondary schools to be accredited you have to have so many per student. We are accredited by the Northwest Association of School Principals. The site is hosted by one of the colleges out here, I just looked through my bookmarks and didn't find it. ------- Someone was asking for the figures on how many students per library media specialist...of course I didn't keep the name, because now I've found the info. It is in the SLJ Sept 2000, School staffing survey. -- Hi, I think New York State requires 1 SLMS for every 1,000 students in public school. Please let me know what you find out. I am a SLMS in a middle school. We have 2 SLMS and a student body of 1700. We CAN NOT KEEP UP. Ev Johnson According to "Libraries Lead Learning" published by the Orange County Task Force for School Libraries (Orange County Dept. of Education)2001: staffing: Exemplary Proficient Basic K-8 small (up to 600) 1 LMT & 1 clerk 1 LMT & 1 clerk 1 LMT & 1 clerk K-8 large (600+ students) 1+ LMT & 1+ clerk 1+ LMT & 1+ clerk 1 LMT & 1 clerk 1 = full time + = another part or full time However, I can tell you that this may be recommended but I don't know of ANY local elementary schools in my area that have even one LMT at the school site, nor do they have a full-time aide/para. I am a paraprofessional and do everything required to run the library program for 700+ students with only 3.5 hours per day (obviously this is not a stellar library program!) but this is definitely the norm for most schools in my area. Other districts in California may have LMTs at each elementary, but it is not the norm. Hopefully that will change but with our current budget crisis, schools may be lucky to have an aide/para over the next few years until the economy improves. ------- MN. grad. standards for librarys and media centers say 1 Media Specialist for every 500 students. -------- School Library Journal had an article pertaining to this exact topic in their September issue (2002), I think.
