Hello colleagues,

I'm in my second year at a K-8 school for Native American children with a
high percentage of at-risk students. Last year I devoted most of my time to
reading appreciation because their skills were quite low, and I believed that
what they needed most was to get comfortable and enjoy being in a library.
This year my principal is urging me to do more skills development. All
grades are scheduled; 5-8 come for only 21 minutes which includes book
checkout. K-4 come for 33 minutes, including book check out.

I searched the archives, and couldn't come up with anything since 1999. I've
got a catalog of Linworth's books, and circled about 20 library skills books
that look good--but I can't buy all 20. I'm wondering if anyone out there
would be willing to share what you use or do with your kids for library
skills lessons. While worksheets may not be the best way to go, at this
point I don't have an assistant and am quite frankly, don't have time to
develop many lesson plans for library skills--introduction or reinforcement.
Also, I still have quite a ways to go as far as collaborating with teachers
so that I can teach library skills along with research projects. At this
point it's still a challenge to get teachers to bring their classes to the
library to do research. They all have computers in their rooms, and may do
projects there, or maybe not, I don't know.

Anyway, if anyone has a source they can highly recommend, I'd be most
grateful.
