Greetings,

My apologies in advance for the way GroupWise messages get trashed when =
posted to the list. No one seems to know what the solution is. I hate the =
way it looks, but it's the only way we're allowed to do email from work! =
If anyone has come up with a solution, please let me know!

First, my original message:

I'm supposed to do part of a presentation to faculty today on writing in =
all content areas. If you have the time to share projects that you have =
worked with your teachers on including any details that would help me =
illustrate potential activities that they can do in the library. I've got =
some suggestions for them already, but any additional things you can share =
would be wonderful!

The two responses I got were:

Hi,
This site has lots of examples (if you go to site map you can find
assignments) and also information for teachers on writing across the
curriculum, rubrics, etc.

These are the examples of specific assignments I gave to teachers; note =
that many could be adapted to any curriculum area:

Use Current Biography to find an article about a mathematician and create =
a resume which highlights important events in his career. (Current =
Biography has an index by occupation.)

Use the Biography Resource Center in DISCUS to compose a letter to your =
class from a scientist telling about her life and most important discoverie=
s.

Use the library's reference materials and DISCUS to explore the history =
and rules of the sport you are currently studying and compare it with =
other sports which are similar.

Using the library's primary source materials, read a document from =
American history and investigate why it was written. Do additional =
research to find out its historical context and justify it in its =
historical context.

Using the art books, identify a painting and write about what is happening =
in the picture.

Design and create the front page of a newspaper focused on the topic that =
you've been studying. Include all appropriate information for a newspaper, =
an illustration and a minimum of three articles related to the topic.

Write a letter asking about a country's food, lifestyle and customs, read =
about the culture of a country and then write a response to a classmate's =
letter.

Have students create an annotated bibliography of resources that they may =
use on an upcoming project. Have it include books, magazines, DISCUS =
resources, and websites.

Have students write a website evaluation for a site related to a topic you =
are currently studying.

Use MasterPlots or Cliff Notes to create a list of five test questions and =
answers about a book (short story, poem) you've just completed that cannot =
be answered if you haven't read the book.

Write several journal entries pretending to live in a studied time period, =
include contact with 5 people from that time period=AFtell what you =
discussed with those people when you met them. (Students would research =
the people in the library.)

Thanks again to the two ladies who responded.

Kim
