Date: Wed, 6 Nov 2002 22:12:12 -0500 From: "Nelson, Janine" <jnelson@RANDOLPH.K12.NC.US> Subject: GEN: Accelerated Reader This is a plea to those folks who use Accelerated Reader. I am a brand new media specialist in a k-5 school and I am finishing up my MLIS at UNC-Greensboro this semester. I have one last term paper and the topic is AR and its impact on collection management. I have found plenty of info about AR- but not about its impact on media collections. This is a topic that has been discussed many, many times before, but I would be extremely grateful if you would please answer a few questions. Your input will be extremely valuable for my study. Thank you in advance for your help. 1. Level of School: _____K- 5________________________ 2. Public or Private: _______public___________________ 3. Your position at the school:___________Media Specialist__________________ 4. Number of years your school has used AR:__________10+______________ 5. Which grades use AR? ______________All (k only a few students)________________ 6. Who manages the AR program? ________Me_______________________ 7. Have teachers and staff been trained in AR? ___ Formally (Reading Renaissance) __X_ Informally ___ No training 8. How are students goals and points determined? Each teacher determines goals. Point are awarded as AR assigns 9. What percent of your annual budget is spent on AR? __x_ less than 25% ___ 25 - 50 % ___ 51 - 75 % ___ more than 75% 10. What impact has AR had on your selection of books and the media collection? We order more books with an eye to AR 11. How do you select books for the AR program? Need for the materials first, then AR second 12. Have you ever made a decision about a title based on whether it was AR or not? Yes but only when the material was a marginal purchase. I pick the titles first then try to get tests for them 13. How would you rate the AR program? __x_Excellent ___Good ___Fair ___Poor 14. How would teachers and staff at your school rate the AR program? __x_Excellent ___Good ___Fair ___Poor 15. What impact do you think AR has had on student learning at your school? It has greatly improved circulation. It also gives good students a challenge. Struggling students are rewarded for their efforts. 16. Additional Comments about AR: __AR is only as good as the teachers who use it. Teachers must monitor student records!!! Teachers should not pay attention to points when evaluating students. It is possible for a student to reach their goal while failing numerous tests. Percentages are better for teachers to look at. Points are just rewards for students not evaluation criteria. Thank you very much for your responses. If you would like the results of this study sent to you, please write your e-mail address below.
