Does anyone out there have a combined K-8 Library? I would like to discuss how you identify the books for the "middle", and the YA's. (Other than YA stickers). At one time we had a segregated section of books for them, but it did not seem to work, so I reshelved the books into the general collection. If a book does not have a YA sticker on it they tend to ignore it. I am trying to juggle a middle-school attitude that the Media Center is for elementary students, their demand for dark teen-angst books, and my belief that many of the YA books are not appropriate for middle school. In their rush to be "grown-up" they are skipping right passed lots of really good books. Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I believe that the kids really need to be steeped in fables, myths, legends, etc. in order to grasp the allusions and really appreciate the literature they read. Ideas/suggestions will be much appreciated. You can reply to me off the list and I will compose a "hit" if there is interest.
