My principal made a "semi-humorous" comment to me about my lack of professionalism yesterday, and I'm afraid I've rather taken it to heart. I'm trying to determine what components constitute professionalism. So far I've come up with the following list. Please post any additions you can think of and also any elaborations or comments on what I have listed. Criteria for Professionalism: Quality of work Professional attire Attendance and promptness (I have trouble with this one, but am working on it) Willingness to take on extra tasks and duties Professional attitude towards students, peers and supervisors Initiative Maintaining a neat and attractive workspace (Also a problem area for me) Seeking out opportunities for further education and professional growth Responsibility and acceptance of consequences A caring attitude High quality paperwork (typed, correct spelling and grammar, etc.) Meeting deadlines (Bit of a problem here) Conducting frequent self-evaluation Keeping personal issues out of the work place And some I have questions about: Does having a cup of coffee at my desk reflect a lack of professionalism? If I sometimes take the equivalent time that teachers would have for planning and spend it relaxing with other teachers, am I not being professional? If I do school work at home is it less professional than if I show up at the building an hour before school or stay an hour after? And finally: Is it necessary to meet 100% of the criteria like those listed above to be professional or should the exceeding of expectations in some areas balance out shortcomings in others? Thanks for any help you can offer. This concern is rattling my brain to the point I'm having trouble accomplishing anything else today.
