Thanks for all the insightful responses to my topic. I think that
several of you have touched clearly on four things I should focus on
(the most "visible" aspects). I'll go in next Monday with a new devotion
to dressing well everyday, being present and on time each day, meeting
deadlines, and (at the very least) finding some drawers to use for
hiding the papers and materials I have out for work on my desk. And I'll
start making a point to schedule times with my principal when we can
discuss how he thinks I am progressing, and what he would like me to
stress further. And I like the "Colombo" technique. I'll keep that in
mind to use when he goes off at random as he does sometime.

One further comment about dressing well. I never wear a dress to work. I
feel it would be inappropriate for the duties I have to keep up with and
frankly I'm one of those "growed-up tom-girls" who is never going to be
comfortable in a dress unless some wonderful man is buying me a very
expensive dinner. I have selected outfits in recent years that are made
of rayon (doesn't wrinkle) and I wear slacks with turtlenecks and then a
vest or blazer to top it off. I usually wear professionally looking
lace-up shoes, but sometimes wear big tread hiking boots on icy days.
I've also been in the habit of wearing jeans and a school polo shirt on
school spirit days with tennis shoes. I think I'll only change a couple
of things there: first, I'll take along my nice shoes when I have to
wear hiking boots outside, and second, I'm going to quit dressing down
for spirit day. I think he still allows that because it was in place
when he became principal, but has never approved of it. So it may make
an impression if I am still nicely dressed when everyone else has jeans
on on Fridays.

And yes, he is a real jerk, to put it nicely, but I have to work with
him and I keep trying to find a way to do so successfully. I do try to
remember that he's under a heck of a lot of stress too, and sometimes he
just says the wrong thing because he's in a bad mood. Like someone said,
we aren't perfect and neither is he.

Thanks for letting me sounding off and for discussing it with me. I
really needed all of you as my sounding board today, and you came though
as you always do on all things! This is a great group! Enjoy your
holiday!
