I teach students to use the genre headings to help them find a book to read.
I use it as a sort of readers advisory tool. I have made sure that all of
our fiction (when appropriate) has genre subject headings. We use Follett
web collection which allows students to put selections into a bookbag.
Students can search by genre and after reading annotations, can compile a
reading list to take to the shelf where they can finalize their decision
after looking at the books. I also teach them to use the catalog when they
are unsure of what to read next. I ask them what the last good book they
read was and then after finding it in the catalog, I show them how to use
the clickable subject headings to browse titles with similar headings.
