Thank you for your ideas for a teachers' Lunch and Learn program. I'm going to try one later this month! Here are the replies I received: Perhaps inviting a department at a time- you could highlight what really pertains to them rather than a generic teacher invitation where you'll be showing stuff to folks who aren't interested. Create a bookmark that they can take with them with the titles of the materials displayed or dmonstrate. Send them out with a treat (candy, cookies, fruit, vegetables, whatever you think they'd like). Remember to put YOUR NAME on everything you hand out! Ms....., the Media Specialist at ..... created this bibliography, showed me materials on XYZ.... that type of PR :)) Invite the principal. See if you can provide lunch! A pizza, a salad from Olive Garden with bread sticks.....some places will deliver- ask the principal if the school could pay for the food..... ***************************************** I have a dessert open house everytime I get a new big shipment of books in and the teachers come in during after their lunch and before they have to be back in class. It always goes over nicely. ***************************************** Last year, we had two successful "Lunch and Learn" sessions and are going to have more this year. Our two programs were "Evaluating Internet Sources: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and "Online Database Jeopardy." The Jeopardy game got the most attention because it was more fun and interactive. My suggestions are: 1. Have a limited number of sessions - too many and the teachers will get tired of them. Keep it special. 2. Expect some people to forget even though you send reminders for the morning of the training. 3. Keep it simple - box lunches, etc. that people can grab quickly and sit down. Our periods are only 42 minutes so we had to move fast. 4. Publicize. 5. With our limited time, we did not have time for lunch and "hands-on" so we tried to involve them with the game for our second session. It seemed to work - we got lots of good feedback. I am preparing to put the Jeopardy game and directions on our library homepage soon if you would like to take a look at it. It may not be there for a couple of weeks though. http://www.d113.lake.k12.il.us/hphs/departments/imc/imc.htm ********************************************** Please tell us what you plan and how it turns out. Sounds like a great idea. Brown bag, or catered affair? I would recommend buying an outlandish dessert. ********************************************** I've had "Breakfast and Books" once or twice a year for the past several years. I have all our new items spread out on tables for display. I hand out to teachers as they come in a sheet on which to jot down items they see that they could use for their classroom. (Sticky notes would also be good.) Before they eat, They fill out a form which says "A book (video, etc.) I can use for my classroom is _____________. A book (video) I would like to ready myself is ___________." This is their ticket. True, some come just for the food, but most find it very helpful. *************************************** I do library lunches twice a year for the teachers. I set up all the new titles, which are available for immediate check out, in order by fiction/non. Videos and tapes go on another table. I supply some snacks and usually a dessert. They bring their own lunches/drinks. The teachers love being able to browse and see what's new. I try to read as many of the new titles ahead of time so that I can make some good reccomendations. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
