Irene E. McDermott, a Reference Librarian/Systems Manager at the San Marino=
=20
Public Library will be presenting a lecture entitled, "Surviving the=20
Internet: Strategies for the High-Tech Reference Desk" at the Library of=20
Congress on Friday, October 25th, 2002, from 10:30am-12:00pm in the=20

=20
this event will be limited to 65, so please allow time to arrive early.

McDermott will speak about methods for adapting traditional reference=20
skills to a digital environment. She plans to address the sudden appearance=
=20

advantages and disadvantages of this new technology for librarians. She=20
will suggest a number of sturdy and reliable Web sites that can be used to=
=20
answer reference questions.

McDermott said, "I love talking about techno-stress: librarians freaking=20
out about having to be computer experts all of a sudden. The book is=20
supposed to be sort of a warm washcloth over the tired eyes of these=20
anxious people. So, I can address this issue: what is gained by librarians=
=20
from the Internet, what is lost, and a few tips to help us all cope!"

Diane Kresh, Director Public Service Collections Library of Congress raves=
=20
about McDermott's upcoming book, The Librarians Internet Survival Guide.=20
She said, "Finally-a comprehensive handbook written by a practitioner for=20
practitioners. The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide can be read cover to=
=20
cover or one can cherry pick according to interest: biography, news, kids,=
=20
health, privacy, it's all here." To read more about her upcoming book, "The=
