Dear LM_NET, I received lots of great answers about ways to best utilize students as library assistants. Some of the ideas include the following: -use 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, -have them apply as for a job (with an application), -only let them get on the circulation computer after proving they are willing to do more menial tasks, -when they first start shelving books, have them use shelf markers so you can go back and check their work, -let them stick to shelving fiction and easy books (not nonfiction), -give them some type of treats or reward, -have a pizza party at the end of the year or term, -use different "teams" during the year so you're not stuck with a problem student all year, -let them use a feather duster, -have each assistant adopt a shelf to take care of, -be very appreciative, -let them help the younger children, - provide them with badges with their pictures on them, -keep a dry erase board visible with their tasks printed on it, -have them help with decorating projects, displays, straightening shelves, etc. Thanks to all who responded!
