One of our teachers recommended the Mimio data capturing system as a
lower cost alternative to a Smartboard. I hadn't heard of Mimio, but I
went to their website (www.mimio.com) and saw a demo. It looks like you
can use it without a projector, and capture what you write on a standard
white board with special pens (they transmit the images back to your
computer). You are then able to save the entire presentation to your
computer. I know this is difficult to envision, but the demo is really
clear. You can also pair up the mimio system with an LCD projector and
get the computer image on the large board. Anyway, the cost for the
mimio system is about half what the cost of a whiteboard would be.
Obviously, there are more advantages to using the Smartboard, but cost
and portability are definite considerations (you could set up the mimio
system on a cart with a projector vs. hauling around a Smartboard). I'm
hoping for input with those of you who have experience with either (or
both) system(s).
1. Do your teachers find the mimio system useful?
2. Is it a hassle to transport a 60" Smartboard and projector from room
to room? Will this be a deterrant to usage?
3. Do you have any advice to share about making a purchase decision?
