LM_NET Archive



This company is taking videos and editing out what they think is offensive =
and then saying they aren't changing the content.  I've heard several =
national news programs discussing it.  As librarians and media specialists =
we need to be aware that this type of editing is expurgation.  One of the =
Library Bill of Rights is that we will oppose expurgation of material =
because it changes the meaning.  Even abridgments of original works can =
change the meaning of a work.  There are thousands and thousands of =
educationally appropriate videos without this editing.  Teachers and =
libraries who don't like the content of a video should look for another =
video that will cover the same subject and still meet their educational =
needs.  In my opinion, the people who are editing these feature films are =
violating the copyright no matter what their argument in favor of doing it =
is.  The courts will be the ones to decide this issue.  =20
