I have had a few requests for advice on what I did to make our book fair a success, so I thought I'd post it to the list. I pretty much did everything that Scholastic recommended. I used the author video in each of my classes in the week prior to the book fair. You could also broadcast it over the school news if you choose to. I had a competition for an aquarium for the class that supplied the most volunteer hours. We announced this contest over the announcements for about 1 week prior to the fair. We notified parents and students via PTA newsletters, class newsletters, and sent an invitation to our family night event the day before. I had the Family night event on the night of our PTA meeting. I decorated the library with a western theme and even played music and served refreshments. I scheduled a time for every class to view the fair in the first 2 days and then had numerous open times where teachers could send students to purchase. Every volunteer received a bandana to wear as a thank you and to identify themselves as volunteers. Teachers came in to make wish lists the afternoon that the fair arrived and we had refreshments for them. Every teacher got at least one of their wish list books. I wrote to a few local businesses asking for donations for class sets. I recevied $400 in donations and purchased 2 class sets and some of the wish list books. We had almost $5000 in sales. My Scholastic rep was terrific. Deborah S.
