I think it's pretty clear that AR does not instill a love of
reading.  What it does do is coerce children to read.  The only good
thing I can see about this is that the more experience they have
with reading, the more likely it is they will be adequate readers.
I would never expect AR to produce happy readers -- only functional
ones.  (The same goes for just about any extrinsic motivational
method, such as summer reading programs, etc.)
