Here's the HIT on novel suggestions for a 10 Standard English. For those who
wonder what 10 Standard is, it's 10th grade, average kids -- not special ed,
not collaborative, not honors or advanced.
Thanks for all your help!

Island of the Aunts is HIGHLY unusual. My reading club was BEGGING for me
to let them finish it.
----------
I've never met a person who didn't enjoy Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game.
It'a little longer than Holes, but actually an easier read (because Holes
skips around in time and this one is linear). I haven't read John Marsden's
Tomorrow, When the War Began, but our YA public librarians highly recommend
it and our 8th grade English teacher read it to her class (she had one class
that went 15 min. longer than the others, so she read during that time) --
and she said that the students enjoyed it (there are 2 other books that
follow that one too).
-------------------
I think a great book that all of the students would love is
Chris Crutcher's "Whale Talk". It is a fantastic read,
with some very serious themes set in a contemporary
setting. It deals with bullying, racism, non-traditional
families, sports, and high school tradition all intertwined
into a fantastic story. I loved it, and every student I
have recommended it to has, too.
-----------------
My kids loved "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", "The Cay", "Because of Winn
Dixie", and "Man Who Loved Clowns".
----------------
I would suggest anything by Robert Cormier or walter Dean Myers. Also a good
one
would be Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. all of these will make the students
really think.
---------------
A Hole in My Life by Jack Gantos is great. Ooops, it's a bio.
