Hello,

As a new media specialist in a preK-8 school, I have been following the
thread on restricting book selection by reading level with much
interest. I too, am passionately against restricting, but our school has
included a decent selection of non-fiction in it's Easy collection and I
don't want to rock the boat too much the first six months or so (I've
already caused consternation with first grade teachers by suggesting
that students should be able to take out more than 1 book over a two
week period). The teachers feel strongly about keeping the current
"leveling" and many don't know the difference between a picture book and
a reader, so I can't even use these labels in the library. I also feel
that "Easy" is misleading because picture books are anything but easy to
read for emergent readers. I'm a little frustrated by the rigid
mentality I'm encountering but don't want to alienate anyone just yet
;-)

Anyhow, my question relates to the shelving arrangement of fairytales
and folktales. I thought that all the school's fairytales were in the
"Easy" 398.2 section but have discovered that many (picture books, too
boot) are also in the regular (older kids) non-fiction section. How
would you reconcile this? I strongly believe that all of the fairytales
should be together but am afraid that if I put them all in the regular
non-fiction, the little kids will never check them out (the teachers
will have a fit if they go over to the "big kids" section) and if I move
them all to the "Easy" section, the big kids will not use them because
they are shelved with the little kid books. I guess I could always pull
them out and shelve them between the two "sections" and treat it as a
special collection? Any ideas or opinions on how to handle these?

Thanks again.
