Madeline, remember that AR is not just an elementary program. Struggling middle school and high school readers have just as much need to read interesting materials on their reading level as elementary students do. So it =is= appropriate for Walter Dean Myers' books to be labeled 3.x because that is the vocabulary level represented there. Remember, AR is =not= a selection tool. It is a reading program. One must still make professional judgements in selecting and recommending books for students. All the more reason for there to be a librarian involved in the process. Carol Simpson, Ed.D. Asst. Professor - School of Library & Information Sciences University of North Texas PO Box 311068 205 Chestnut, ISB #205 Denton, TX 76203 940-565-3776 (voice) 940-565-3101 (fax) csimpson@lis.admin.unt.edu >>> "Madeline L. Buchanan" <mlbuchanan1@charter.net> 09/02/02 08:20AM >>> It doesn't make sense that "Scorpions" by Walter Dean Myers is leveled at 3.7 while Grolier's Nature's Children books are leveled at 5th grade up. Even most of the Dr. Seuss books are 3.9 up. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
