The 'dot' issue is why I chose to write the level on the inside jacket.
I got student helpers from the high school as well as parent volunteers and
para-educators to help go through the collection and mark the books. It
took about a month to get the majority of them marked. The second thing I
did was put the reading level as an added entry in the catalog.
Our elementary students could check out 2 books at one time. Most of the
teachers made cards or bookmarks for each student that listed their ZPD
levels. The teachers decided that we would ask students to choose at least
1 book in their level. I saw many students who began the year complaining
about that policy end up choosing both books in their ZPD because they had
such success reading and understanding the texts.
