Hi, We are having a discussion about the placement of the spine label on the books in our high school library. Currently, if the spine is wide enough, we simply place the spine near the bottom. If the spine is thinner than the number is long, ie if the number would continue on to the front of the book if the label were placed on the spine in the normal way, we do either of two things. If we can, we place the spine label sideways on the spine so the entire call number is visible. If it is too thin for more than one line of type, then we print a pocket label and cut off the top line with the call number information on it. We then put this long thin call number label on the spine. Our goal is to keep the entire number visible on the spine to aid in shelving the books and finding them. We are considering changing this practice because we end up printing two labels for each book simply because it takes too much time to figure out which ones need one or two in the catalaging process. It also looks pretty odd. Do any of you do this sort of thing? What do you do if you have a number that is too long to fit the width of a spine? I realize this is a long, convoluted email but I would appreciate any input you can provide.
