I'm interested in how other secondary librarians handle the extra duties
that are placed on them by their principals and supervisors.

I am the only Librarian in my school (our student population varies from
450 up to 700), and also serve as Technology Facilitator (think of a
local "Support Central" for computer problems). In addition to this, I
have in the past been asked to facilitate up to three Satellite Classes,
have taught a Media Arts class, and have taken on dozens of "small"
extra tasks from creating individual certificates for every student who
makes the A or B Honor Roll every six weeks to administering the
Homework Hotline.

My situation has actually improved this year with many of these
responsibilities being divided out among other faculty members and I am
really enjoying the freedom to focus on running the Library, something I
haven't experienced in about 15 years.

What is the situation in other schools out there? Do you feel overloaded
with extra duties that aren't truly a part of your job description, or
is your position respected in its own right? Do you have additional
librarians in your school, so that the work is shared? Do you have
student aides who are a big help? How about parent volunteers? Have you
assertively addressed a problem of this type with your principal, and if
so what were the results? I'm interested in any methods you use to deal
with this problem if it exists for you.

I'll post a hit of responses I get. Be sure to e-mail me personally
rather than posting to the list.
