Netters,
I decided to try the Birthday Book Club and have had overwhelming success.
Since pitching it last week, we already have about 75 permission slips that
have been returned. However, I did get one VERY negative letter telling me
that I was completely out of line to ask for donations of money to the
library. Instead, I was told I should accept books. Of course we have a
collection development policy, etc., and I can explain that to the parent,
but I need a little more support and defense. I pretty much used the letter
that was posted a week or so ago changing a few things. I have asked that
if the students would like to participate, they should send $10 for their
birthday. They will get to select a book out of a stack of new books that I
have already selected. A name plate will go in the book with their name,
they are the first to check it out, they get their name on a designated
wall, and they will be invited to a birthday party at the end of the year.
The parent is upset at the price, as well. She feels that $10 is asking way
too much and that books can be purchased much cheaper than that (I'd love to
know where). Thanks for your thoughts and ideas. I need to send her a
reply or call her ASAP.
