Target: Programs vs. pop up ads

I recently downloaded a program recommended by a member of this list =
Adaware that was free and was surprised at the number of trackers that =
had been left on my computer. I wondered if there are any free programs =
that block pop ups. It is such a waste of energy getting them off but I =
always like to save a few pennies for fun stuff when I can. If not free, =
can anyone recommend one that you have used and found successful?
