This posting is from our Alabama Virtual Library training committee, and I thought it worth passing on. WEB SITE CAPTURES IDEAS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIES National Library Week isn't just for public libraries savvy media specialists can use it as a news hook to promote their learning centers. A Web site called the Internet School Library Media Center has a wealth of ideas for capturing the hearts and minds of students during both Children's Book Week and National Library Week. If the "Media Center Sleepover" sounds too daunting, you might want to consider a contest like "Guess the number of books in the media center." Note: You might want to hurry right over to the site, as the homepage claims that it's closing soon. http://www.uptilt.com/ct.html?s=4rs,25kc,3xy,ji5n,hx14,8rlb,ge8v LIBRARIES ARE THE HEART OF POETRY MONTH ACTIVITIES In addition to National Library Week, April is host to National Poetry Month, vigorously promoted by the Academy of American Poets. A variety of Web sites contain tips for celebrating at the library. Among the best is the Academy's, which includes an entire section devoted to helping libraries plan activities during the month, and Gale's Poet's Corner, which culls a selection of the publisher's acclaimed literary resources in one online resource. Some libraries are already in gear. For example, in California, the Laguna Beach Branch of the Orange County Library is celebrating with a poetry contest aimed at drawing out their patrons' hidden haikus. Read their story and be sure to check out the Academy and Gale links for ideas, too. http://www.uptilt.com/ct.html?s=4rs,25kc,3xy,3hup,4h51,8rlb,ge8v http://www.uptilt.com/ct.html?s=4rs,25kc,3xy,m9fs,dj76,8rlb,ge8v Molly Bates MLIS Student University of Alabama Tuscaloosa AL __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
