I don't want to start a huge controversy and I probably sound obnoxious but
I don't really care what the previous or next librarian did or does. I only
compare with myself - am I doing the best with what I have been given.

I know we were all taught in Library School to collect all this statistics -
but budget reasons, reports, comparisons, collection development, etc. --
but I am still not convinced that it is worth the effort. I know what
circulates and what doesn't - I know the gaps in the collection -- I don't
need statistics to inform me of any of this. I have never like circulation
statistics because so many materials used in the library are not part of the
circulation. And yes, I know Mandarin would allow me to enter special
collections, etc. but, again, I am not sure it is worth the effort.

I am not sure (as I am the staff person - there is no aide or other help)
when or how I would keep or any of this info.

But, as I said - I am unique in this and for those who need the statistics I
can certainly see their worth.

Disclaimer Again: If this message ends up with all kinds of symbols,
numbers and other odd things, it's because I'm at work and checking my mai=
l
through another server that doesn't send email very well=2E=2E=2E=2E=2E
******************************************************************

It's also good to keep statistics for the next NEW librarian=2E It's nice=
 to
be able to walk into a library and check the statistics from the previous
year to compare with the new year=2E This gives you an idea of "whether
you're doing something right" or if there are other problems=2E

When I was at the university level, we kept statistics like crazy=2E Now =
I'm
stuck with this mindset!! I keep statistics on circulation, database usag=
e
(each database, the number of hits, times of usage, etc=2E), computer usag=
e
(word processing, Internet, etc=2E), hourly patron usage (number of studen=
ts
in the library each hour), montly patron usage, bibliographic instruction
presented (another form is used for this, but then added to a monthly
report as only the number of presentations given), items purchased, and
items weeded=2E

(Hard to believe I HATE math, huh?)

I send the information (by email) each quarter to all of my teachers AND t=
o
the administration=2E This gives everyone the information regarding how t=
he
library is used, by whom, and when=2E It also justifies when the library =
is
busiest and why I can't possibly substitute for teachers when they're
absent=2E

It's probably futile, but at least they know how things compare from
previous years and where I want to go from here=2E (It also helps me to
justify certain things that we feel are important --- resources, library
hours, personnel, etc=2E)

We might also want to consider what happens during administrative
changes=2E Wouldn't it be a good idea to have some core (circ, # scheduled=

classes, topics taught, age of collection, tech use) stats kept even if
CURRENT admin is not interested?
Also, there may be need (or desire) to present to school board, district
supervisors, PTO but not necessarily on a yearly basis=2E

As a district, the media specialists here have done 1 to principal's
council, 2 to school board, one to curriculum supervisors in last 5
years=2E Trying to increase that=2E The statistics are helpful to show
district wide issues and compare with national standards and statistics=2E=

My principal is just the opposite=2E She appreciates my monthly reports of=

how many people are using the library=2E She doesn't need to know how many=

books are checked out, though, so I don't provide her with that
information=2E

I use circulation statistics to help me decide where additional
materials are needed=2E

From Dr=2E Cuseo's experience and mine it would seem that we need to be
sure that our reporting meets our administrator's needs=2E
