It’s Spring Break so I will take a liberty and offer a book review for adults. The title is “American Pie: Slices of Life (and Pie) from America’s Back Roads” by Pascale Le Draoulec. Ms. Le Droaoulec has been the restaurant critic for New York’s Daily News. In 2002, she received the James Beard Award for Newspaper Restaurant Criticism. Ms. Le Drauoulec set out on a quest—to find the quintessential American pie—having very never ever made one. Ms. Le Drauoulec is from France, where tartes are more common, not pies. In fact, may be an American invention, not prevalent throughout the rest of the world. Her stories are about pie and about America, maybe a part of America that will soon be lost, as, who has time to make a pie? Underlying this Holy Grail is also a search for her own self. She has found the “pie man”, but is he perfect? No pie is perfect. This book inspired me to create a rhubarb cream pie with a lattice crust from a twenty year old cookbook on my shelf called “A Treasury of Great Republican Recipes”. The recipe comes from Iowa, so it must be good. Usually I use a pre-made Pillsbury refrigerated crust, but I will attempt the real thing in the morning. Pie perfection is in the crust, not the filling. This book is a story of redemption, love, and loss. Read it and weep. This is the story of pie, family, and America. You are welcome to share pie recipes with me.
