Note: please read this *entire* message before hitting reply!

Every June (and often August/September) here on LM_Net we respond to requests from
newbies about how to manage their responsibilities in their new jobs/schools.
It occurs to me that perhaps we should pool our collective (hard-earned) wisdom
now. . . . before the school year is over and many of us go off-line for the summer.

While there is lots of advice in the archives (just do a search on 'new librarian')
and I've even posted a set of practical guidelines/timelines on my website, at
http://www.aliceinfo.org/YSGD_newlibjob.html ,
here's what I'd like to suggest: (read carefully, now!)

1. If you could give ONE strategic survival tip (50 words or less) to a new
school librarian, what would it be?
2. Send your short tip (remember: under 50 words!) to ME: aliceinfo@excite.com ,
NOT to the list, BY MAY 10. I will then compile -- and organize -- a hit, and post
ti to the list by May 17.
3. Make sure that the words NEWBIE SURVIVAL are in the subject header of the
message you send TO ME.
4. Start your message with a keyword/descriptor, so that I can organize them more
easily.
Example: "LUNCH: do not eat at your desk / on the run because you 'have so much
to do.' Be collegial and congenial: join the crowd in the faculty room. You
don't get brownie points -- or extra pay -- from TPTB for self-sacrifice! "

SO; send your SINGULAR SUCCINCT SURVIVAL SUGGESTION for NEWBIES to ME by May 10,
and I'll post the Hit by mid-May, for maximum effectiveness!
(yeah, I know I used a lot of CAPS: I am shouting so you'll pay attention to the
crucial details.   ;-> )

TIA,
Alice Yucht, (happily retiring from full-time employment this June!)
