GEN: Bar Code Scanner for Follett Windows Version?

Dear Friends:

Last winter my school bought an upgrade to convert Follett Unison to the
Windows version.  We waited till now to install the new program so we
could make the change after summer school but before school resumes in
the fall.  We find that our old scanner will not work with the new
system.  To buy one from Follett would be very costly--$600.  At this
time of uncertain school finances it would be hard to come up with that
much money.

I know that there are scanners available at lower prices.  Does anyone
have experience they could share with me about a less exspensive scanner
that will work with the Follett library system for Windows?  We are
using fourteen digit barcodes.  The Bar code symbology is Code 39.
